Didn't I just do this? Dr. Shapiro is currently on his way down from Missoula to crash here for three hours before we head to the airport with our gliders once again. Anticipation is high, just like last time. Always an adventure walking into the airport with fourteen foot, one hundred pound bags.
I short packed my glider today and I'm waiting for extra pairs of hands to help me get the bag closed on it. Once again, I recruited some help with the packing process.
The first time I short packed, it took ten hours. On the way back from OZ, with Dr. Gravelle's help, I did it in just over two. By myself this time, it probably took around three. Most of my help ended up leaving the scene, and the one that stayed just slept.
Below is the glider short packed with extra parts, shrink wrapped and ready for padding.
All padded up, waiting for more hands to stretch the bag all the way around.

So, I bought the same pads and wrap... no way it was going to fit into my bag, so I wraped the padding on the outside of the bag and wraped it again. Did it in a few hours by myself. When TSA got it they swabbed the ends and called a supervisor- he told her if she'd follow protocol and felt good about it, to send it though (giving her the nod)... she proceeded to cut off my wrapping, unpad, and unzip the whole thing. I couldn't believe it. I told them if it wasn't propperly padded and got damaged, and it I couldn't find the damage (ie: in the carbon cross-bars), that I could die. I think they were a little concerned about liability at that point, so they retrieved my bag with my wrap and helped my redo it, though not as good as the first time.
what a pain in the ass!
