Superfly open @ Powder Mountain

My buddy Lee, a HG / PG / airline pilot from Santa Barbara called to say he'd be attending the Superfly Kiteboarding event @ Powder Mountain this weekend. I picked him up at the airport on Friday morning, and we headed up.

The Scene.

Once at the top of the mountain, we hopped on a snow cat that took us to an open, gently sloping ridge, where lots of riders were kiting. Some of the worlds best were in attendance, and all were out practicing, so I hastily started shooting.

The snow cat was installing rails, and the riders were getting used to the layout. It gave me ample opportunity to shoot from every angle using different focal lengths.

After the practice session, Lee took his first hop on his snowboard with a kite. He's a proficient kite boarder on the water, and transitioned easily to the snow.

The practice session ended up being the best opportunity to shoot the scene. Encroaching clouds and gustier winds made the freestyle rounds less predictable.

Around 4pm, the cold and gusty wind really set in, so we jumped a snowmobile ride back to the parking lot and called it a day.

My partially frozen digits thawed painfully on the ride back, but the day was well worth it. I was exposed to, and got the opportunity to shoot, something new.
